Summary

Every fourteen days we invite 80 asylum seekers to the Havendiners. Transport is by bus. Volunteers accompany the guests there and back.

Detailed description

The Harbor Dinners are every Monday. Then 20 Amsterdammers have a drink, dine, dance and integrate with (every other week) 80 asylum seekers or 80 Ukrainians, who come to the dinners by bus.

The asylum seekers live in the emergency shelter in the A&O Hostel in Amsterdam Southeast. They are accompanied on the way there and back by volunteers, who of course also attend dinner.

This is a unique opportunity to meet asylum seekers. On the buses, at the table and when dancing. The deployment lasts from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. It is also possible to guide only the outward or return journey.

About Stichting Havenstraat

Since November 2015, we have been organizing a Harbor Dinner every Monday (except during the summer holidays and the corona stop) for 80 refugees and 25 Amsterdammers, i.e. guests of the donor of the evening or secondary school students. The students first go on an excursion to the AZC. The 200th dinner will be coming soon!
These are wonderful evenings where refugees and Amsterdammers meet in an informal environment. With non-alcoholic drinks, Middle Eastern dishes and a children's program. After dinner, the refugees dance their Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, Kurdish or Eritrean dances. Some Amsterdammers participate enthusiastically. Those passes are quite tricky!

For the Amsterdammers, the refugees turn from numbers to people in one evening. Prejudice evaporate, contacts are made.

At the end of the evening everyone goes home satisfied, cheerful, enriched and a little more integrated.
