Children, bicycles and... the freedom of movement
Unfortunately, not every child has their own bike. There is at least one child per class who does not have their own bike. Cycling to school, sports club or friends is not an option for these children. The problem is that not all parents can afford to buy a bike for their child. As a result, children are forced to stand still. Having a bike is important to be able to join in with other children. It expands a child's world in ways you cannot imagine. A bike of their own gives a child freedom.
In the whole of the Netherlands, poverty is assumed to affect approximately 9% of the Dutch population. And children also notice this.
At the same time, many Dutch people have a bicycle, or more, in their shed that is not being used. By being able to use this `stock` of bicycles through the Children's Bicycle Plan, it can help to solve the problem that has been identified. Especially if these bicycles are refurbished in a bicycle workshop. Then they are safe again (working brakes, lights) and beautiful (to be proud of), and make the neighbourhood agile!
